Porsche’s Latest Tech Renders Heel-Toe Downshifting Obsolete

When the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 broke cover this week, it did so with a software application that automatically blips the throttle during downshifts in conjunction with the seven-speed manual transmission as a part of the optional Sport Chrono package. That feature will spread across the stick-shifted Carrera lineup for 2013. A Porsche spokesman [...]

Chinese Company Sort-Of Buys Spyker, Will Build $250,000 Luxury SUV

Just a year ago, a group of investors headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut, bought Spyker. Official: Volkswagen again named tops in Total Quality survey by Strategic Vision

Strategic Quality Award

Global marketing and communications firm Strategic Vision has announced the results of its annual Total Quality Index. In the 2012 edition of the study, Volkswagen Group of America achieved the highest rating in Total Quality. This marks the German automaker's second year of achieving the accolade. According to the press release from Strategic Vision, the runner up spot was actually a tie between Chrysler Group and Ford Motor Company.

Strategic Vision factored in vehicles like the Audi A4 and A8, as well as notable VW vehicles like the Golf, Eos, and Tiguan in its study. The study also pointed to the quality of vehicles like the Flex, F-150, as well as the Fiat 500 for such a tight finish between Ford and Chrysler.

Toyota came out with the fewest reported problems of any brand. According to the study, only 17% of Toyota owners reported having problems.

Strategic vision says this was its closest finish in "Total Quality" that it has ever reported. According to the release, "Customers are increasingly defining 'quality' holistically and using Total Quality in their decisions." In assessing the Total Quality Awards, Strategic Vision calculated the results from surveys sent out to 45,390 individuals who purchased new 2012 model year vehicles from September to December of 2011. Scroll down below for the press release.

Toyota capable of winning – Wurz

Toyota's podium finish in the Silverstone 6 Hours proves the TS030 Hybrid is already capable of winning in its inaugural season in the FIA World Endurance Championship. That is the view of Alex Wurz, who says that the car's ability to match Audi on outright pace at the British circuit shows it can be a contender in the remaining four rounds of the championship. Although the Austrian acknowledges that improvements need to be made, Wurz is adamant Toyota can capitalise on any misfortune to befall its German rival

Pro/WC Drivers Continue NiCAS Dominance

As expected when the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS) heads to the Irish Hills of Michigan, the field sizes were up, and the adrenaline meter hit a new high. With speeds upwards of 210mph around the lightning quick 2 mile superspeedway, one small mistake is all it takes to demolish a racecar, and ruin all chances at a solid finish. While some drivers would capitalize on other’s mistakes, some drivers would set their sites on pure domination, not needing help from anyone’s misfortune. As mentioned last week, this is the third and final season for drivers to race their way into the 2012 NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series (NiPS). Until this point, it has been current NiPS and NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) drivers leading the way, without much [...]

Hamilton: Title still realistic for McLaren

Lewis Hamilton is convinced that McLaren has a 'real chance' of winning both Formula 1 championships this year. Having triumphed last time out in the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Briton is eager for the return to action in Belgium next weekend as he aims to close down the advantage that title leader Fernando Alonso currently enjoys.

Report: 'AXI' dropped from NYC taxis

2012 Toyota Prius V New York City Taxi

Oh, how we love "rebranding." From the stumblebums at The Gap to the desperate deckhands on the Microsoft Titanic, needlessly changing your logo is all the rage these days, so we shouldn't be surprised to see the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission join in on the fun by eliminating the word "taxi" from the city's cabs. That's right, while they'll still be yellow and hailing one will still prove challenging for out-of-towners, New York's taxis will now be identified by a yellow capital "T" in a black circle.

2012 Toyota Prius V New York City Taxi with old logoAccording to The New York Times, besides their "axi," cabs will also be losing their passenger door fare panel - the information will be displayed on the cab's video screen instead. The subtle shift in design is the result of New York's Taxi of Tomorrow program, in which the Nissan NV200 was picked to become the city's exclusive taxi vehicle, starting next year. The t-in-a-circle logo was created by Smart Design.

David S. Yassky, the Taxi and Limousine Commission Chairman, responded to questions about whether people would be able to identify the new cabs by saying, "Even the greenest of greenhorns will know that it's a taxicab," according to the report.

McLaren: Clinical finish key to title

McLaren believes that making more of its opportunities is key to its Formula 1 title hopes over the second half of the season. Team principal Martin Whitmarsh thinks the outfit has the basic car package it needs to triumph - but it has so far failed to get the best out of its MP4-27. That state of affairs has helped Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari, which started the season off the pace, to open up a healthy lead in the title chase

Dovizioso confirmed at Ducati

Andrea Dovizioso has agreed a two-year deal to race for Ducati from 2013, the team has confirmed, as the Italian replaces outgoing superstar Valentino Rossi. Yamaha announced earlier this month that it had re-signed Rossi after the seven-time MotoGP champion finally gave up in his mission to add an eighth crown with the Italian manufacturer. Since then Dovizioso has been heavily-tipped to replace Rossi, and the deal was made public on the eve of the Czech MotoGP at Brno this weekend.

ETC: Awesome Lego Lamborghini Countach is on a grand scale

It's the ultimate childhood icon of the '80s built with the ultimate childhood toy of the '80s: a Lamborghini Countach fashioned from Lego blocks. One German member of Eurobricks.com created exactly that as he designed and built his very own Lego Lambo.

According to the Lego-centric forum, Georg (aka Polo-Freak) started with a 1:18 scale model of the Countach and used a computer program to begin mapping out the construction of Lego Lamborghini starting in 2007. Three years later, he started buying the necessary pieces for his Lego masterpiece, and while he doesn't give any ballpark figure of how many blocks it took to built the car (or at what cost), the number of pieces required for this project is probably more Legos than most of had in total as kids.

The scaled-down Lamborghini is surprisingly detailed with all of the car's unique elements - such as the raised spoiler, rear air scoops and even the pop-up headlights. After all the planning, it still took him two weeks to assemble. That is probably more dedication than most of us have put into our full-scale projects, and the end result is a nothing short of incredible.

Report: Stefan Jacoby says Volvo contemplating Mini rival

2011 Volvo C30 R Design - Red - rear three-quarter dynamic cornering view

Up or down? That's the question about which way Volvo is going to take its brand: solidly into premium, full-size sedan luxury or into a smaller near-premium offering to challenge what is, right now, a very hot segment. Most of the chatter has centered around the former option, with Volvo declaring it would go for the top luxury guns, a patent filing suggesting an S100 flagship, and talk of a C90 luxury coupe to fight models like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe.

In between, that there's been speculation on the other side, with reports that Volvo is looking for a partner on a small car. Officials have themselves confirmed that within ten years, they won't have an engine larger than four cylinders, and everyone figuring that Volvo will have to do something with the spot occupied by the expiring C30 other than rename it and add two doors. The V40 takes the fight to the A3 and BMW 1 Series five-door, but what about premium and popular subcompacts like the Mini Cooper, Audi A1 and A-Class?

Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby tells Automotive News that the Swedish brand is considering a model in that space, but to do so would require not only the aformentioned partner, but a smaller engine. We're not sure what to make of the engine comment, since it apparently already has smaller engines planned for its larger line. If such a car comes, it won't be soon; Jacoby says his priorities now are "Volvo's core ranges" and getting the Scalable Platform Architecture fully integrated into the brand's next-generation cars. But with the scattershot temperament of Volvo news lately, who knows.

Season championships earned at Suzuka

Season Two of the Red Sox Racing League’s 2012 multi-class racing schedule consisted of twelve races over a 13 week stretch from May to August of 2012.  Thirty drivers began the season, with 19 driving the Honda Performance Development ARX-01C (HPD), and 11 electing to drive the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R.  Drivers needed to finish well in nine of the twelve races on the schedule if they hoped to compete for the overall season championship.  Although the C6R field had few drivers, 7 of the 11 who chose the car completed the minimum number of races to compete for the Class B championship.  Only 8 of the 19 HPD drivers managed to do the same. Brad Vincent had secured his position as the overall winner of the Class A field before [...]

Owners are asked to contact Suzuki or NHTSA. The recall of 101,688 units is expected to begin in September. Scroll down to read more in the government agency's official notice.
