Hybrids get specific recovery zones

Le Mans 24 Hours organising bodies the ACO and FIA have created specific braking zones at which Audi and Toyota's hybrid entries will be able to make use of energy recovery systems. In order to limit the size of the recovery systems - and therefore the budgets required to develop them - the ACO and FIA mandated that a maximum 500 kilojoules of energy could be transmitted between two braking phases

Official: Volkswagen Beetle Fender Edition debuting at Leipzig Auto Show

Volkswagen's partnership with Fender - one of the world's leading musical instrument companies, best known for its rockin' guitars - officially kicked off in the United States with the debut of a new premium sound system in the Jetta GLI. In Europe, however, the automaker's reworked Beetle is the first car to have this high-end audio kit, and to celebrate, Volkswagen has created this special Fender Edition Beetle that makes its official debut at the Leipzig Auto Show.

No, a shiny, new guitar does not come with the car.

Volkswagen Beetle Fender EditionWhat you do get, however, is a Beetle fitted with Volkswagen's 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, as well as standard visual kit like 18-inch "Disc" aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlamps, Deep Black Metallic paint and Fender logos at the base of the A pillars. What's really cool, though, is the new painted dashboard, done up in a specific sunburst tone that's commonly seen on Fender's guitars. No, it's not wood, but it sure looks like it could be.

Of course, the highlight of this special edition Beetle is the Fender audio system, packing 400 watts of power, nine speakers, a subwoofer and four deluxe tweeters.

Look for the Fender Edition Beetle to arrive Stateside in the fall of this year. Pricing will be announced closer to the car's on-sale date, but for now, scroll down to read the official press blast for more details.

Boullier: No tests contributing to show

Lotus team boss Eric Boullier believes that the lack of testing in Formula 1 is a part of what is making the races so unpredictable this year. The 2012 season has generated a record six different winners in the first six races, making it one of the sport's most exciting starts to a campaign in recent years. Although the new Pirelli tyres have been highlighted as the main reason for the unpredictability, Boullier believes that the fact that teams cannot test their updates before the race weekends is a big contributing factor

Williams: Potential not shown in Monaco

Williams insists it had the potential to feature far more prominently in the Monaco Grand Prix, and was disappointed with both Pastor Maldonado's 'avoidable' FP3 clash with Sergio Perez and its eventual return of just one championship point. The Grove-based squad headed to the principality on the back of its first Formula 1 victory in eight years, which came courtesy of a faultless drive by Maldonado at Barcelona. The Venezuelan spoiled his Monaco chances in FP3 however, when he collided with Perez - an incident which let the team down, according to chief operations engineer Mark Gillan, who believes the team was capable of far more

Brawn: No point in tyre complaints

Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn thinks it is pointless for drivers and teams to get frustrated by the tyre situation in Formula 1 - because the most important thing is dealing with it to achieve success. With most outfits admitting that they not yet fully understand how to extract the best performance from Pirelli's 2012 tyres, there is a high chance that race results will remain mixed up for now. And although the influence of the tyres has led to criticisms of Pirelli from some quarters – including Michael Schumacher – Brawn reckons that the only proper response for teams is to keep focused on making themselves better

iGPSWC Round 7 on iRacing Live Saturday

Round 7 of the 2012 iRacing.com Grand Prix World Championship Series will be broadcast on iRacing Live at 6 pm EDT (22:00 GMT) on Saturday, May 26.  The online race will feature the world’s top sim road racers in their Williams-Toyota FW31s for 75 laps on the 12 turn, 2.53 mile Infineon Raceway “long” course. 2010 champion Greger Huttu rebounded from a disastrous race at Okayama International to score his fourth win of the season a fortnight ago at Road America and regain control of the iGPWCS point race.   Now it’s up to his principal rival – defending champion Hugo Luis – to do the same, after he was eliminated at Road America by a start-line crash.  Meanwhile, Roland Ehnström and Jake Stergios will renew their battle for third place [...]

Lotus stops Raikkonen’s WRC return

Kimi Raikkonen will not be allowed to take part in Rally Finland later this year, AUTOSPORT has learned, with his team bosses unwilling to release him from his commitments to the Lotus Formula 1 team. The former world champion had sought clearance to make a one-off return to the WRC, even though it is understood his F1 contract forbids him from taking part in rallying. However, following talks between Raikkonen and his boss Eric Boullier in Monaco, he was informed that the memory Robert Kubica's rally crash last year meant the team was not prepared to allow him to compete.

Rossi ‘vindicated’ by Le Mans podium

Valentino Rossi says his podium at Le Mans proves he can still deliver when he has a competitive bike underneath him. The Italian has faced growing questions about his ability to rediscover his previous prowess since his switch from Yamaha to Ducati, particularly when he was comfortably outpaced by team-mate Nicky Hayden in the 2012 season-opener in Qatar

The picturesque valleys of Brondehach (Gaelic for “wooded slope” and “forest entrance”) echoed with the shrill screams of the Cosworth DFV for a week’s worth of online racing. QUALIFYING On his return to the cockpit from a three week layoff, reigning champion Fritsche blitzed the field with a scintillating 1:10.522 second pole time. The only man in the [...]

Wild Monterey Weekend

After a calm week in the British Isles to start the season, the iRacing.com Star Mazda Championship took to tight and twisty Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for Week Two.  While it was again Tony Repussard emerging with the points lead, a wild and chaotic week of online racing unfolded in his wake. He emerged from the week with a season-high 206 points for winning the 18:30 GMT Sunday race. Repussard found himself starting from pole for the week’s highest SOF race, a familiar position for the French sim-racer. Alongside Repussard on the front row was Kevin Korjus, the only other driver to qualify in the 1:18 range in the race. Off the line Korjus and seventh qualifier Rafal Mroz battled massive wheelspin that put them back into the pack. Mroz [...]

Pedro de la Rosa: "Monaco is by far the most difficult and technical circuit in the entire Championship. The only trick to this track is to do miles and not change the car's set-up too much because you can find more time in the driver than in the car. Video: ABC: Thousands of rejected/condemned gas pumps in use, could cost you $$$

gas pump measurement

Most of us likely assume that the gas pump that is providing petrol is giving you the fuel that you pay for - no more or less. While that may be true in most cases, ABC News in Baltimore, Maryland proves that sometimes pumps do bad things to good people.

The report details Maryland state gas station inspections that have revealed over 4,000 defective pumps over the last four years. In all, that's between five and six percent of the 40,000 gas pumps in Maryland, or way too many error-prone pumps for our tastes.

While our primary concern is that customers aren't getting what they pay for, it seems the gas station owners are more likely to get the short end of the stick. The report claims that station owners are three times more likely to lose money than the customer. Scroll down to watch the ABC News report.

Winterbottom takes race one pole

Mark Winterbottom took pole position for the first race of the V8 Supercars weekend at Phillip Island, as Ford Performance Racing outshone arch-rival Triple Eight in Saturday's qualifying session. In an ultra-close 20 minutes, championship leader Jamie Whincup's Triple Eight Holden led the way for the first half of the session, before FPR surged to the front, as practice pacesetter David Reynolds took provisional pole ahead of stablemates Winterbottom and Will Davison. The Triple Eight then jumped back to the top, with Whincup and team-mate Craig Lowndes moving to first and second for a spell.
