Plato plays down practice speed

British Touring Car star Jason Plato believes qualifying in the top six at Brands Hatch this afternoon will be a struggle, despite going fifth fastest in the brand new MG in second practice. On its first proper day of running, the Triple Eight-prepared NGTC MG6 was less than half a second slower than Andrew Jordan's pacesetting Honda Civic.

Young driver test could be in Britain

Formula 1 teams are weighing up the idea of running this year's young driver test at Silverstone in the week after the British Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT has learned. The annual three-day run has taken place for the past two years, and is a chance for teams to try out young talent that would not otherwise get the opportunity to drive F1 machinery. Although the original idea was for the test to take place at the end of the season, as it did in 2010, last year it happened after the penultimate event in Abu Dhabi because teams did not want to stay on in Brazil after the finale.

Report: Government warning sparks fuel-buying surge in UK

The UK is currently experiencing a run on fuel after a government minister warned citizens to stock up ahead of a possible strike by British fuel tanker drivers. Despite the fact that a strike is anything but certain, and must also be preceded by a week-long warning period, Britain's Petrol Retailers Association says that gasoline sales are up 81 percent and diesel 43 percent since the comments were made. The average price of fuel there today is £1.40/liter, or $8.49/gallon.

Cabinet Minister Francis Maude had originally commented that Britain's drivers should store fuel, "maybe a little bit in the garage as well in a jerrycan." Late Tuesday, Transportation Minister Mike Penning attempted to walk back that comment a bit, stating that Maude had misunderstood the size of a jerrycan (20 liters). Penning, however, still remarked the he supported the advice to keep fuel tanks topped off in case a strike date is set.

Lines to purchase fuel today are reportedly so long in places that authorities are ordering some stations to close in order to clear the road congestion. Gasoline containers are also reportedly flying off shelves.

The potential strike would involve some 2,000 drivers represented by Unite, the country's largest trade union. The union is negotiating for minimum standards that would cover things like wages, hours and holidays for drivers that deliver fuel to Shell and Esso gas stations, as well as supermarkets.

The UK government is defending the ministers' comments as taking appropriate precautions, but other organizations, like Britain's Automobile Association, are blaming the official advice for panic buying that will lead to fuel shortages ahead of a strike that may not even happen.

Helio Castroneves has taken an emotional win in the IndyCar season-opening race on the streets of St Petersburg. Remembering the Roots of Being a Motorsport Fan

For the past seven years I’ve worked in the motorsport industry as a reporter, and in that time, I’ve enjoyed the comforts of free coffee, clean toilets and air conditioned media centres at circuits all over the world. As a result, I (and I feel my peers), have lost touch with what it’s like to actually be a race fan. Certainly, working in media means getting up-to-the-minute information and news that is digested, then delivered to race fans in a coherent manner; but it also means, losing the essence of what being a follower of motorsport is all about. Let’s not forget, it’s the paying fans who help to bring the money into the sport, via entry fees and sundry purchases, plus they are the key component of bringing a [...]

Despite rumors, Volvo not ceasing electric C30 production plans

volvo c30 electric

Dutch website NU recently reported that Volvo expects low demand for its C30 Electric, and therefore it decided to stop building the mostly electric car (it has a small, ethanol-burning heater to keep passengers warm). The original source for this information was a story in the Belgian newspaper The Age that cited Volvo's government affairs director, Anders Kärrberg. Turns out, this isn't quite right.

First, Volvo has always said the C30 Electric is a limited program. When the company started making the attractive EV in last summer, the public plan was to make just 250 units. So, the fact that the automaker is getting ready to finish up building the 250 units and then reevaluate the situation is not a surprise.

We asked Volvo's Malin Persson about the situation, and she told Autoblog that "[it has] never been our aim to continue with production of C30 Electric for a longer period of time." She added that:
  • [Volvo Car Corporation] will not end the production of the C30 Electric - but it has always been a project limited in numbers and time.
  • Approximately 200 cars have been built from the first generation, another 50 remain to be built before summer.
  • In the second generation, starting after the summer, 100 cars will be built in cooperation with Siemens and with Siemens technology.
  • The know-how and experience VCC has gained and will gain from the C30 Electric project will be extremely valuable when taking decisions about the way forward when it comes to electric cars.
So, instead of reporting that Volvo is stopping C30 Electric production, the reality is that 100 vehicles has been added to the build order. How aggressively Volvo continues to push on with electric technology beyond its C30 program - in something like the XC60 plug-in hybrid - remains to be seen. Kärrberg told The Age that Volvo thinks EVs will only make up one percent of the market in the next eight years, thanks to expensive batteries and a hodgepodge of government incentives.

Video: Footage shows Eric Clapton's bespoke Ferrari leaving London dealership

Ferrari SP12 EPC

Back in the summer of 2010, Eric Clapton stopped by the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy, with one request: could they build him a 458 Italia with a V12? Nearly two years later, this is what resulted.

Reportedly called the SP12 EPC (bearing the initials of the famous rock guitarist), the one-off product of the Ferrari Special Projects division first surfaced with a few photos the other day, but now we've got video footage of the car moving under its own power away from a London dealership - presumably en route for delivery at the multiple Grammy Award winner's home.

With styling cues borrowed from the 512 BB - an early mid-engined Ferrari that was never officially homologated for sale in the United States - the SP12 EPC is said to be based on the 458 Italia. Which isn't a bad place to start. The big question on everyone's mind, however, is what resides under the hood? Did Ferrari manage to shoehorn in the twelve-pot as hoped, or did it stick with the 4.5-liter V8 in the donor car? Hard to say, but sources point towards the latter.

Follow the jump to watch the blurry, shaky footage and listen to the custom creation rumbling, and share your thoughts - eight cylinders or twelve - in the Comments section below.

Hunter-Reay concerned by kerbs

Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay has expressed concern over changes that have been made to the kerbs at the St Petersburg street circuit ahead of this weekend's opening round of the 2012 IndyCar season. The cars are yet to run on the Florida track, with the first practice session scheduled to start on Friday afternoon, but Hunter-Reay has suggested that the reprofiled kerbs could be too aggressive for the new Dallara DW12s, meaning that some cornering speeds will be lowered. "In the past here, we've been able to run over [the kerbs]," Hunter-Reay said.

Name That Exhaust Note, Episode 128: 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S

On Tuesday, we posted an audio recording of a mystery car’s exhaust note. To hear it again, click play above. Many of you figured out that this week’s sound came from a Porsche 911. Most of those who guessed it was a 911 also correctly identified it as the latest 991-generation 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera [...]

What It Is: The ultra-powerful AMG derivative of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake. Don’t be misled by the application of the term “shooting brake,” however, which is normally used to denote two-door station wagons. Mercedes has applied the term to a conventional four-door wagon here, obviously inspired by its constant referral to this car’s [...]

Electric-Car Predictions Set New Records [Bruce McCall]

The U.S. Wattage Council, the visionary consortium of Sunday-supplement editors, appliance-store owners, high-school shop teachers, and people who have taken rides in flying saucers, has announced that the electric automobile is finally poised to fulfill its century-old promise “any minute now.” In one typical breakthrough, the electric car’s oft-lamented limited driving range has been almost [...]

2013 Subaru BRZ in blue taking a corner at speed - video screencap

The 2013 Subaru BRZ is "one of the most rewarding cars we've ever driven" says Edmunds after subjecting the new coupe to some track time. This, despite having a 0-60 time that rivals that of some minivans - 7.3 seconds. Inside Line says those numbers are mostly due to an overactive rev limiter that forces a third-gear shift at 59.2 mph. We bet that's an early tuner fix. Also likely to be improved with an aftermarket reflash is the 15.3-second quarter-mile time.

So you won't be winning many stoplight drag races in box-stock form, but as we all know, there's far more to a fun car than just straight-line numbers. According to IL, "the BRZ offers a level of engagement that, until now, has been either too costly or too impractical for the average enthusiast." They even go so far as to compare the BRZ's overall character to a Lotus Exige and the beastly Porsche 911 GT3(!).

No, the BRZ can't hang with either of those hardcore Europeans, but Inside Line says its balanced mixture of handling, cost, every day usability, and practicality make for "a perfect balance between date nights and track days." Check out the video after the jump.

Video: Denver Zoo shows off tuk tuk powered by animal poo

Poop-powered tuk tuk

When you run a zoo, we imagine there's a large quantity of animal excrement to dispose of. Fertilizer is the first thing that comes to mind. But there are only so many zoo gardens in need of nutrients. Sooner or later, you're faced with surplus of tiger turds, camel crap and snake, um, shizzle.

The Denver Zoo has decided the best use of its panda poop is to power a 20-year-old tuk tuk, or motorized rickshaw. Actually, the zoo takes all its animal waste and most human-produced trash and makes "gasified pellets" that are then subjected to very high heat in a no-oxygen environment. The pellets then give off syngas, which is burned in a generator to produce electricity used to charge the batteries for the tuk tuk's electric motor. Got all that?

The zoo says the tuk tuk is its second prototype to test the technology. The first was a syngas-powered blender used to make margaritas for zoo events. Mmmm. Tasty.

When its new elephant exhibit opens June 1, the zoo hopes to have it powered by syngas. Eventually they hope to take 100% of the zoo's animal waste and most of the human garbage from the zoo to produce at least 20% of their power needs. Check out the video after the jump.

Hendrick wins final Johnson appeal

Hendrick Motorsport got all but one penalty overturned Tuesday in the final hearing against NASCAR's ruling following technical infractions found on Jimmie Johnson's car before the Daytona 500. John Middlebrook, Chief Appellate Officer, ruled to rescind the loss of 25 championship points in both the drivers' and owners' standing, a six-race suspension for crew chief Chad Kanus and car chief Ron Malec, but ratified the $100,000 fine against Knaus. The decision comes as an unexpected result, as for the first time since Middlebrook is in his position he got initial penalties totally overturned.

Rosenqvist heads Barcelona test

Felix Rosenqvist underlined his status as pre-season favourite by topping a second F3 Euro Series test within the space of a week at a wet and dry Barcelona circuit. The Swede has gone fastest during two days of official running at Valencia last weekend, and was again the pace-setter on both days for Mucke Motorsport as the cars and drivers moved up the Spanish coast. Rosenqvist's test-topping time of 1m39.634s came on the opening morning and enabled him to head his team-mate Pascal Wehrlein by 0.397s
